What is the mortar bonding bridge?

In this post, we tell you everything you need to know about the mortar bonding bridge.

Concrete is present in our daily lives, and can be found in most of the structures of the buildings we see in the street. However, despite its good behaviour, it may be necessary to act on it, when modifications, screeding, repairs, etc., are required.

It is here, during the repair, reconstruction or modification stages, that the fundamental role of mortar bonding bridges comes into play.

Mortar bonding bridge: What is it and what is its function?

We can define a bonding bridge for mortar as the ideal product whose main function is to improve the adhesion of materials such as concrete or mortars to any type of support such as other concretes or mortars, steel, metal, wood… this will be determined by the performance of the bonding bridge itself.

This type of product has the enormous advantage that it can be applied on indoor and outdoor surfaces and for both vertical and horizontal applications.

Uses of the mortar bonding bridge

When it is time to apply a mortar to old concrete, we start by making sure that the concrete we are going to work on is stable and has adequate cohesion and strength. If this is not the case, we will first begin to deal with this problem by repointing the weak concrete to achieve a completely clean and resistant surface.

Once everything is ready, it’s time to get down to work. We will start by gently applying the product, it is important to check that everything is well distributed and soaked. Brushes, rollers or spray guns are the best tools to achieve this, depending on the characteristics of the bonding bridge and the work to be done.

Our recommendations when using the mortar bonding bridge

In order for the application to be 100% effective and to obtain the best results, there are a series of recommendations to be taken into account:

  • The concrete substrate on which we are going to work must always be clean, free of cement slurry, oils, grease, remains of release agents, old paints, etc.
  • Once all the material has been applied, apply the new mortar or concrete to the old concrete substrate, respecting the times and instructions of the bonding bridge.
  • It is a product that under no circumstances can be mixed with other products that modify its original formula.

Our main recommendation is to follow all the instructions given by the expert and those described in the Technical Data Sheet and labelling of the material.

Bonding bridge for mortars: Molins Products

At Molins, we have an extensive catalogue for connecting bridges, with two products standing out:

BETOPOX 93

BETOPOX 93 is suitable for structural concrete reinforcement work. It is a low viscosity epoxy bonding bridge to ensure excellent adhesion to both the old concrete and the steel to be coated.

It is essential that the substrate where we are going to apply this product is not damp and the concrete or mortar must be placed while the resin remains sticky, and never before one hour from the application of the product. In this way it will consolidate properly with the coating and acquire a monolithic adherence.

BETOPRIM

BETOPRIM is suitable for cementitious primers for reinforcement protection and bonding bridge in concrete and mortar, leaving a rough surface for the fresh application of the repair mortar.

Either of the two we offer has a wide range of advantages for both small and large construction sites, as well as allowing us to save considerable time at all times thanks to their easy application.
