The importance of corrosion inhibitors in civil works and bridges

Reinforced concrete is widespread in large-scale construction, both in buildings of various types and functions and in tunnels, bridges and a large number of industrial works. Most bridges, as well as a large number of civil engineering infrastructures, are built with reinforced concrete.

Reinforced concrete structures are widespread as a highly effective solution due to their enormous strength. However, concrete, like steel and other construction elements, is also exposed to corrosion, especially when located close to the coast.

Thus, these types of materials can suffer degradation processes, both in buildings and in civil works projects, which make maintenance and repair work necessary.

Concrete constitutes an external protection screen for the reinforcement against corrosion, providing durability to the structural element, both physically and chemically. Therefore, in order to maintain its stability and functionality intact, concrete structures require certain care and a maintenance plan, which will be conditioned by different aspects such as use, exposure environment, current regulations…

We must not forget that concrete ages with the passage of time, losing part of the initial properties of protection against corrosion that it offers to the reinforcement.

It is our responsibility to make repairs to structures more corrosion resistant and therefore more durable. This is especially important in severely corrosive environments. Greater durability will mean fewer repairs, greater structural integrity and a longer service life, which will also translate into greater sustainability, also in the case of bridges and any other major civil infrastructure development.

At Molins we use the most advanced technology in Migratory Corrosion Inhibition MCI®, on the basis of which we have developed the most advanced technical mortars on the market: PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO 40 MCI and PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO FLUID MCI.

We work to develop effective solutions for the comprehensive treatment of reinforced concrete structures, which ensure the quality and durability of conservation and maintenance work on buildings and civil infrastructures of all types.

We offer technical advice and a wide range of products for the repair of reinforced concrete structures and piers. Our products also effectively prevent concrete corrosion, thus extending the service life of bridge structures.

Advantages and properties of CORTEC MCI-2021

And another of Molins’ essential products for concrete protection is CORTEC MCI-2021, a surface sealer that brings a host of benefits by using a blend of reactive silicates, surface activating agents and migratory corrosion inhibitors to protect reinforced concrete against corrosion.

Penetrates into the concrete by migrating through the pores of the structure, forming a protective film around the reinforcement. It complies with the requirements of the EN 1504-2 standard. It has CE Mark 2+, for use in building and all types of civil engineering works.

Among its fields of application, we can point out:

  • Reinforced, precast, prestressed, post-tensioned or marine concrete structures.
  • Bridges, motorways, concrete streets with steel reinforcement exposed to corrosive environments.
  • Parking platforms, ramps and garages.
  • Concrete piers, piles, pillars, pipes and utility poles.

Another product for concrete repair in extreme environments is Sulforesistant Mortar.

In this post, we highlight all the advantages and list the properties of CORTEC MCI 2021, although in Molins we have a technical area where we provide our customers with a battery of tools to facilitate their work and their day to day.

Among its properties, it protects against the damaging effects of corrosion, even in the densest concrete. The migratory inhibitor stops the corrosion of rusted areas. It delays the onset of the corrosion process while slowing down the corrosion rate, increasing the service life of the reinforcement.

In addition:

  • Easily applied by spray, roller, brush, etc. reducing equipment and labour costs.
  • It is non-toxic, as it does not contain calcium nitrite, phosphates or solvents.
  • Organic, safe and environmentally friendly.
  • Blocks attack by carbonation and chlorides.
  • It is water-based and non-flammable for easy handling.

Finally, it moves to adjacent areas to protect metals. Increases the durability of reinforced concrete and increases its resistance to abrasion. It protects against acid and chemical attack and penetrates deep into the concrete to protect the anode and cathode.
