This centre was created with the aim of welcoming pilgrims and providing them with a comfortable meeting place once they have completed their journey. All the services related to the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago are concentrated here, such as the Pilgrim’s Office, where the Compostela, the document that certifies the pilgrimage, is obtained.

It occupies a large area, 3,600 m2, between Carretas and Domingo García-Sabell streets. The original building dates back to the end of the 18th century, founded by Archbishop Bartolomé Rajoy, and a large part of its structure has been refurbished, as well as its landscaped areas. One part was completed in 2015 and a second part was completed in 2018.

Reason for the intervention

Make a recommendation and subsequent use of products from our Cal range due to the great deterioration of the facades, courtyard and interior vaults.
The rehabilitation was the complete remodelling of the building preserving the aesthetics of the exterior façade, interior courtyard and interior vaults.

The interior courtyard and the vaults are the parts that showed the most damage and therefore the most intervention when it came to preparing the support.

“Spalling of old mortar.
“Detachment due to salts.
“Detachment of layers of limewash.

The project management requested the remodelling of the façade and the interior courtyard with lime mortar construction solutions, providing breathability and preserving the old aesthetics.
Molins proposed the use of our different lime coating solutions. Thanks to its properties, lime mortars comply satisfactorily with the basic documents; protection against humidity, indoor air quality and protection against noise. The use of lime as a binder gives the mortars a bioclimatic property, allowing the wall to breathe due to its high permeability to water vapour, providing comfort and indoor air quality, as well as waterproofing against rainwater.

Performance

The following procedure was finally carried out:

Preparation of the substrate
The substrate had to be resistant, stable and free of dust and salt residues, for which loose and cohesionless parts were removed by mechanical means.

Regularisation layer
REVAT CAL® MURO was filled and shaped with REVAT CAL® MURO, where thicknesses were greater than 10 mm. REVAT CAL® MURO is classified as G-M5 according to EN 998-2.

Finishing and protection layer
with high breathability (water vapour permeability coefficient _6). In an average thickness of 10 mm, a REVAT® 110 fibreglass mesh was included as reinforcement at singular points of doors and windows. REVAT CAL® ENFOSCADO is classified as GP-CSII-W2 according to EN 998-1.

For the protection of REVAT CAL® ENFOSCADO and clay bricks in the interior vaults, it was decided to use BETOCRIL, a solvent-free, odourless, waterproof and grease-proof, but breathable and permeable to water vapour, without modifying the appearance of the substrate, non-yellowing, leaving a natural finish.
