Concrete repair and protection

What is R4 Mortar: its role in repair

With the passage of time and weather and environmental factors, concrete deteriorates in buildings. That is why, when it comes to repairing a concrete element (pillars, walls, beams, slabs, slabs), it is necessary to make the right choice of repair mortar to use. In this article we explain everything you need to know about R4 Mortar.

Repair mortars for structural elements are a mixture of cement, aggregates, additives, fibres and water in variable proportions depending on the performance to be achieved or the type of application to be carried out. The combination of the different additives makes it possible to reinforce or improve particular aspects such as waterproofing, resistance, elastic modulus…

Repair mortars are an essential material in construction. There are several classes: R1, R2, R3 and R4. We will focus on the R4 types which are developed for high strengths. They are suitable for repairing modern and/or high-strength concrete structures.

R4 Structural Repair Mortar: What is it?

A Class R4 repair mortar is a product suitable for use in the structural repair of concrete. This type of high strength mortar is suitable for all types of reinforced concrete structures where the concrete has to be rebuilt.

Structural concrete repair with R4 Mortar

When repairing a concrete structure, the advantage provided by the PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO family over other repair mortars is the execution of the structural repair with a single product and in a single step, achieving the repair with one coat and that’s it. As they comply with the requirements of the UNE- EN 1504-3 (Class R4), EN 1504-7 (protection of the reinforcement) and EN 1504-2 (protection of the concrete) standards. This results in a highly durable repair.

In the case of concrete repairs with Class R4 repair mortars, any of these products will provide a perfect and long-lasting result: PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO manual application and rapid setting for structural repairs and rapid repairs of medium-sized surfaces PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO 40 sprayable for structural repairs, or PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO FLUID fluid mortar for structural repairs by pouring.

What is the procedure for using this mortar? The first thing to do is to remove all the deteriorated concrete, leaving a regular shaped repair area, clean the rust from the reinforcement and then dust the area for better adhesion.

Next, apply the chosen product with a trowel, trowel or pour depending on the mortar used, after wetting the substrate. The finish can be applied with a damp sponge. Thanks to the careful granulometry, it provides a finish similar to that of the original concrete.

The PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO family allows the execution of structural repairs with a single product and in a single step. It facilitates application, finishing and rapid commissioning. High mechanical resistance, even at early ages. Thanks to its careful granulometry, it provides a cosmetic finish similar to that of the original concrete.

Technical characteristics of R4 Mortar

Class R4, has a compressive strength of over 45 MPa, 2 N/mm2 adhesion and 20 GPa modulus of elasticity.
