Lime coatings

What is lime mortar?

Lime mortars are mainly made up of 3 products: lime, sand and water. This material is ideal for old and modern infrastructures where breathable, lighter and not excessively resistant products are required. These are some of the most outstanding characteristics and that is why experts tend to use this material, due to its high breathability and low modulus of elasticity.

It is excellent for treating problems related to damp or to give an antique effect style to walls. It can be used for both exterior and interior works in homes, buildings, etc… and are almost obligatory in heritage buildings.

Thanks precisely to the lime binder, we cannot overlook the fact that it is a product that is highly regarded in terms of sustainability because it captures CO2 from the environment, as this molecule is necessary for its hardening.

How to apply lime mortar on exteriors? Molins’ solution to dampness on façades

First of all, we must check the state of the surface, taking advantage of it and ensuring its resistance. If the area to be renovated is old, we must remove all the deteriorated and disintegrated elements that we find and that may be susceptible to detachment.

Once we have checked and repaired the main damage, we will focus on pressure washing, if necessary, to ensure a more thorough cleaning. A surface mineralising and consolidating product such as PROPAM MINERALIZADOR can also be used. Immediately start using the products REVAT® CALMURO and REVAT® CAL FONDO.

Then we apply REVAT® CAL ENFOSCADO with a slightly finer texture, as coloured finishing mortars.

It is advisable to use REVAT 110 GLASS FIBRE mesh in joints between different materials or as reinforcement in corners of doors and windows. The mesh acts as reinforcement by distributing the expansion stresses due to temperature and minimises the appearance of cracks due to this cause.

Molins advice on how to put an end to rising damp with lime mortar

Lime mortars eliminate dampness as they are highly breathable, but our advice is that the safest way to eliminate dampness, especially from capillary effects, is to work with a combination of products. Create a system that combines the high breathability properties of PROPAM CAL SEC and the moisture barrier properties provided by products such as PROPAM CREAM, which can be easily applied by introducing or injecting it into drill holes previously made in the lower part of the wall.

It is also recommended not to apply any of the products in unfavourable weather conditions, such as heavy rain, strong wind or extremely low or high temperatures, as these may adversely affect the procedure and the result.

PROPAM® LIME SEC

This is the outstanding mortar, as Propam® Cal Sec is a water-repellent and breathable decorative mortar for the renovation of damp walls. Its distinguishing feature is the formation of macropores that allow greater breathability and permeability to water vapour, together with the qualities provided by the lime, and also serve as salt deposits in the event of crystallisation resulting from water evaporation. The product resists sulphates and is suitable for interior and exterior use, as well as for restoration-rehabilitation works or new construction. Highly recommended for heritage buildings.

At the same time, it stands out for its properties as a mortar that is impermeable to rainwater, which makes it applicable to the entire façade, not just the skirting board, it has very good performance and allows any type of finish: smooth, scraped, trowelled, swirled, tirolesa, etc.

REVAT® LIME RENDERING

On the other hand, we may need Revat® Cal Enfoscado mortar, which is suitable for use as a covering and grouting layer for old masonry. One of the advantages over other mortars is that it is a waterproofing mortar for waterproofing façades.

with high water vapour transpirability. It is easy to apply and has excellent adhesion.

PROPAM® CREAM

Another of the great products that we can use to solve the problems of

PROPAM® CREAM is a water-repellent product in cream based on siloxanes in aqueous dispersion, which is injected with a spray gun into holes in mortar or masonry, forming a horizontal chemical barrier inside the walls that prevents water rising through capillary action.

REVAT® LIME WALL

REVAT® CAL MURO mortar is suitable for the preparation of walls with large gaps and irregularities due to its compatibility with old masonry and traditional mortars. This material is suitable both for renovations in new construction and in restoration and rehabilitation of old and heritage buildings. It has a high permeability to water vapour, favouring the breathability of the wall, and is also suitable for interiors and exteriors.
