How to restore an old façade with lime mortar

SoluciónHow to restore an old façade with lime mortar

Descripción sistema

Over the years, façades deteriorate and need to be renovated. It is therefore necessary to know the characteristics and behaviour of the materials they are made of (brick, natural stone, lime mortar, single-layer mortar) in order to make the right choice of new cladding.

The highly breathable and water vapour permeable mortars of the REVAT® CAL range provide a highly decorative coating for all types of facades and interiors, as well as for the restoration of all types of buildings, including emblematic and old buildings.

Continuous exposure to inclement weather (rain, frost, sudden changes in temperature, etc.) leads to the natural ageing of façades. In order to restore them, it is necessary to use the appropriate cladding materials.

PREPARATION OF THE SUBSTRATE

Verify the condition of the support by checking its strength.

On old masonry substrates, hollow out part of the joints and remove degraded elements.

Wash with pressurised water to clean and finish removing fungus, dust, paint residues, degraded parts, etc… from the surface of the substrate.UseREVAT® CAL MUROas masonry lime mortar for the repair or reconstruction of the masonry.

Apply REVAT® CAL FONDO as a bonding and levelling coat, to obtain a correct planimetry, prior to the application of the finishing mortar.

ApplyREVAT® Lime ENFOSCADOorREVAT® CAL TRADITIONAL Limewith a slightly finer texture, as coloured finishing mortars. It is recommended to applyREVAT® GLASS FIBRE MESH 110on the whole finishing coat, especially when there is a great heterogeneity of materials in the substrate.

APPLICATION

When mixing the mortar from the REVAT® CAL range, use the same proportion of water between mixes, leaving the paste to stand for about 5 minutes. Spread the paste on the substrate with a trowel or spraying machine.

REVAT® Lime Mortar REVAT® CAL ENFOSCADO can be left as a coloured finish coating (smooth, trowelled, re-mixed, etc.).

UseREVAT® TRADITIONAL LIMEto obtain highly decorative coloured finishes typical of traditional lime stuccos, in addition to being able to apply glazes and oxide stains on it.

To do this, spreadREVAT® CAL TRADITIONAL LIMEcompactly, without irregularities, with a trowel, overREVAT® CAL FONDO or ENFOSCADO, in a thickness of 5 to 10 mm depending on the finish.Apply the desired finish when the product has the required consistency, usually between 1 and 6 hours after application.

Recommendations

  • The usual substrates for application are: ceramic brick, volcanic tuff, mixed masonry, stone, concrete…
  • Do not apply on plaster, paint or non-absorbing surfaces.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight or strong wind.
  • Do not apply when there is a risk of rain or frost.
  • Apply between +5ºC and 35ºC temperature.
  • Protect the lower parts of buildings by skirting boards or by applying PROPAM® CAL SEC as a base coat.
