Laying of natural or artificial stone on façades

SoluciónLaying of natural or artificial stone on façades

Descripción sistema

Thanks to the development of bonding materials and fastening techniques, stone (natural or artificial) has for some years now been a very attractive material for architects and builders to use as decorative and non load-bearing façade cladding.

Bonded facades

The tiles are adhered directly to the substrate using adhesive mortar and mechanical anchors. With this system, the stresses that may be generated in the façade are transferred directly to the tiles, which can cause detachments.

The use of a suitable anchoring system is essential when it comes to bonded façades. VAT® FLEX RAPID should be used as a bonding material, i.e. a highly flexible, highly adherent adhesive mortar, which helps to prevent the parts from falling off.

PREPARATION OF THE SUBSTRATE

Apply directly on concrete elements, or plastered on brickwork.

In the case of applying the coating on mortar render, wait one week for each centimetre of mortar thickness. It is important that the rendering has completed its shrinkage process.

Check that the substrate is strong and stable, checking the flatness with a 2 metre long ruler, deviations shall be less than 5 mm to avoid excessive thicknesses of mortar glue.

APPLICATION

Carry out stakeout to determine the precise position of the slabs.

Spread VAT® FLEX RAPID on the substrate using a notched trowel.

Double gluing when the format of the pieces is greater than 900 cm² and/or weight greater than 40 Kg/m2.

Press the tiles in order to achieve a correct solidification of all the pieces, thus avoiding the existence of gaps between the tile and the substrate.

Tile-to-tile joints must be at least 5 mm wide. Use BORADA® UNIVERSAL or BORADA® PLUS.

Correct planning and execution of movement joints (width 8 to 10 mm) by sealing them with BETOFLEX.

Recommendations

  • Do not apply at temperatures < 5º C or >30º C.
  • Do not glue.
  • VAT® FLEX RAPIDcan be used for exterior skirting boards on brickwork with a maximum height of no more than 2m.In these cases, do not apply in thicknesses greater than 15 mm and not less than 5 mm.
  • In specific cases of high coating weight or immaturity of the substrate,PAM® ECOGEL SUPERFLEX, a glue mortar with high adhesion capacity and very high deformability, should be used.
  • It is advisable to leave a 5 cm gap between the first slab of the façade and the ground, in order to avoid water rising through capillarity, which could deteriorate the materials that make up the cladding.
  • UseVAT® FLEX RAPIDfor the laying of translucent stone, light marble and pieces of a transparent nature. Due to its fast drying time, it prevents the appearance of stains and efflorescence.
  • Use PROPAM® REPAR 20R to fix the anchors to the support.
