Complete renovation of the pavements in the station galleries during station renovation work. This article explains in detail how the renovation of the pavements has been carried out with materials suitable for high performance and subjected to continuous heavy traffic.

Challenges and constraints

“Durable and long-lasting surfacing must be achieved.
“Modernisation of pavements.
“Pavement subject to heavy traffic.

Molins Solution

“On screeds laid after removal of old flooring.
“Use VAT® PORCELAIN FLEX, a cementitious adhesive with mixed binders especially for laying tiles with and without absorption. Suitable for laying large format tiles.
“Use BORADA® EPOLUXE, a decorative epoxy mortar that is easy to clean, bacteriostatic and fungicidal for sealing tile-to-tile joints.

Execution

1. On the previously regularised substrate, the ceramic pieces are glued using VAT® PORCELÁNICO FLEX. The adhesive must be correctly applied under the tile. Respecting the appropriate tile-to-tile joints and the corresponding intermediate and perimeter joints.

“Before starting the grouting process with BORADA® EPOLUXE , the floor must be cleaned of dirt and adhesive residues in the joints to avoid problems of stains and lack of thickness.

ADHESIVOS Y JUNTAS

BORADA® EPOLUXE is a two-component product in a container containing component A in the form of a coloured paste and component B in a closed can. The mixing is carried out correctly by pouring component B completely over the paste and mixing the two components with a whisk attached to an electric drill until a homogeneous paste is obtained. This mixture is mixed at low revolutions to avoid heating the mixture, as heat accelerates the hardening of the epoxy resins and would reduce the pot life of the mixture.

The process of filling the joints is carried out with a hard rubber trowel, spreading the product diagonally and pressing on the joints, until the joints are completely filled. The use of a hard rubber trowel allows the excess mortar to be removed with the same trowel, thus avoiding the loss of material and facilitating the subsequent cleaning stage.

5.At the same time, without having to wait, clean the remains of BORADA® EPOLUXE with asponge soaked in water. Rinse the sponge frequently and change the water when it is clogged with resin. So that the working cloths are finished after this stage. The use of plenty of water ensures that no resin remains on the tile. While one worker inserts the joint, another one cleans and defines it from behind, leaving it finished.

Technical note

Reactive resin grouts such as BORADA® EPOLUXE, classified RG according to the UNE-EN 13888:2009 standard, are especially recommended for highly demanding situations, such as the case we have seen in this article. But they are not only used in situations of high mechanical demands, they are also used in situations of high chemical demands such as in laboratories, factories, workshops, saline pools… and of course in spaces where the cleanliness and healthiness of the parameters must be guaranteed such as operating theatres, spas, bathrooms, spas, industrial kitchens…

Epoxy-based grouts have historically been mortars that required a very technical and professional application by installers. They had to take many precautions for the correct subsequent cleaning of the surfaces, using specific machinery, hot water, cleaning chemicals… Today, thanks to BORADA®EPOLUXE, the application of this type of high performance mortars has been facilitated in such a way that they have been incorporated into the usual masonry work of our renovations such as shower trays and domestic kitchens. This allows the grouting work to be carried out quickly, leaving the job finished in a single stage.
