Type of work
Improvement in the thermal envelope of residential buildings.
Intervention date
Year 2020

The project shown has been executed in almost all the residential buildings in the neighbourhood, with a scope of approximately 10,000 m2. It has contributed significantly to improving the energy efficiency and comfort of the homes, as well as renewing and modernising the appearance not only of the individual buildings, but also of the neighbourhood and its surroundings.

The work consisted of installing the PROPAM® AISTERM thermal insulation system on the outside. Finished with acrylic finish according to specific colour requirements authorised by the City Council. As part of the refurbishment of the thermal envelope of the different buildings and the renovation of facades with advanced ageing.

Challenges and constraints

“Improved energy efficiency with a strong and durable cladding.
“Modernisation of neighbourhood facades in line with municipal requirements.

Molins Solution

“Cleaning and sanitising of the facades prior to the execution of the system.
“Install SISTEMA® AISTERM, on the previously prepared façades, a system in accordance with ETE 09/0005.
“Use 8 cm PROPAM® AISTERM PLACA EPS GRAFITO, an expanded polystyrene thermo-insulating panel with graphite additives specifically stabilised for exteriors. According to the requirements of the EN 13163 standard. Material with thermal conductivity 0.032 w/mk, and providing a thermal resistance for 8 cm thickness of 2.50 m2k/w.
“Acrylic finish, by means of REVAT® PLAS finish, with colours adjusted to municipal requirements in a range of blues, greens and greys.

Execution

“Laying of the starting profiles on the façade and preparation of the supports to receive the gluing of the panels. To continue with the execution of the different stages, paying particular attention to the coating applied, to the regularity of its thickness and to the drying periods between coats.

“The next step was the reinforcement of singular points such as gaps and edges with the installation of PROPAM® AISTERM PROFIL CANTONERA CON MALLA, to finish with the execution of the base layer, by means of the application of PROPAM® AISTERM mortar, applied in two coats and reinforced on the inside with PROPAM® AISTERM MALLA DE FIBRA DE VIDRO 160.
The mortar PROPAM® AISTERM, applied in two coats and reinforced on the inside with PROPAM® AISTERM GLASS FIBRE MESH 160, overlapping the mesh by 10 cm with the consecutive one, obtaining a high-performance and dimensionally stable coating.

“Once the base coat was finished, the chosen finish was applied, with REVAT® FILM as primer and REVAT® PLAS in the different colours selected, in thicknesses between 1 and 2 mm. REVAT® PLAS was applied manually with a trowel and then trowelled. The system was finished with this last layer.

Technical note

This work is an example of how with the AISTERM SYSTEM, we have been able to provide a technical solution to the needs of action on the facades of buildings, within the project executed for the comprehensive treatment of the thermal envelope of buildings undergoing renovation. Contributing very significantly not only to energy efficiency, but also contributing to the durability of the buildings on which it is executed, thanks to the protection that it means for the facades and structural elements to have a thermal envelope that protects them from hydrothermal cycles. In addition, we have been able to observe how the AISTERM SYSTEM contributes in a very important way to the aesthetic renovation of the neighbourhood as a whole.

The function of the building envelope is to protect the building and contribute to climate control. The Technical Building Code describes the thermal envelope of the building as the enclosures that separate habitable spaces from the exterior, and the interior partitions that separate habitable and non-habitable spaces that also border the exterior. So its function is to allow the desired thermal comfort to be achieved by limiting energy demand, acting as a barrier.
