What is a self-levelling mortar?

What is a self-levelling mortar, find out in the Propamsa Blog.

Self-levelling mortar is a continuous coating that is normally applied indoors, although we can find materials that can also be applied outdoors and its main function is to level and improve the base to be covered. The main objective of this type of mortar is to achieve continuity and uniformity throughout the treated surface.

In general, levelling mortars of this type can be used in various areas of construction.

Self-levelling mortar: What is it?

We are talking about a mortar composed of sand, cement, water and additives that is used to prepare, harden, smooth and level surfaces. It can be used both outdoors and indoors and, among its many advantages, we can highlight its speed and ease of application, and its fluidity, a property that allows it to level the surface by itself, hence its name: self-levelling.

In this sense, this type of self-levelling mortar is used to adapt the work surface so that another type of covering, such as laminate flooring, paint or tiles, among others, can be laid without any problems. The result, after application, is a smooth surface that allows us to easily lay a definitive covering.

Additives used for its creation

The additives frequently used in this type of mortar are: superfluidisers, to obtain a more fluid material that is easier to spread; shrinkage reducers, to limit the shrinkage caused by the large amount of water in the mixture; at the same time they are aerators, allowing the plasticity of the material to be improved and the density of the material to be reduced; finally, they are considered viscosity modifiers, preventing the aggregate from settling to the bottom.

Self-levelling mortar What are its main uses?

This type of mortars regularise and level surfaces, providing better performance, speed of execution, homogeneity throughout the surface and are very easy to apply, given their mechanical characteristics, they can be applied on floors in industrial areas, as well as in garages or car parks.

High-strength self-levelling mortar: Main advantages

Self-levelling mortars offer, among their many qualities, high compatibility with mortar and concrete substrates, obtaining high adhesion, they do not crack or fissure, harden quickly, which facilitates rapid commissioning, are highly resistant to surface wear, and allow different finishes (tiling, painting, light paving…).
