Cementos Molins launches new cements and concretes with lower CO2 emissions

The building products and solutions company accelerates the transition to carbon neutrality with a new line of cements and concretes.

With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, Cementos Molins has announced the launch of cements and concretes with a lower carbon footprint. Under the umbrella of its sustainability strategy “Sustainability Roadmap 2030”, the company is introducing two new portland cement products that are being used to manufacture the concrete we will discuss below. The new cements and concretes represent a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 25% compared to products manufactured with the current type I cement of the same strength category.

In the field of cement, the company is launching two innovative solutions – DRAGON BM-PL (CEM II/B-M (P-L) 42.5R) and DRAGON IV-SR (CEM IV/A (P) 42.5 R-SR) – which offer various applications in the construction sector, the former for the manufacture of concretes and mortars and the latter for use in works submerged in the sea or in soils with a high sulphate content. The clinker used to manufacture these cements complies with the European taxonomy emission factor. Thus, the launch of these products strengthens the company’s commitment to the circular economy: for the manufacture of the new cement, Cementos Molins uses more than 55% of alternative fuels, which minimises the use of fossil fuels and offers a second life to industrial waste. In addition, the use of different types of additives during cement grinding contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. The two new products will represent more than 41% of the total portland cements that Cementos Molins manufactures annually in Spain.

The synergy between the different businesses of Cementos Molins favours the reduction of the environmental footprint in other construction solutions, as in this case in the manufacture of concrete. Promsa, the company’s concrete, mortar and aggregates business, already produces all its concrete with the new cement with a lower carbon footprint, which enables it to reduce its CO2 emissions by up to 25%. The new concrete can also incorporate recycled aggregates in the manufacturing process.

Thanks to these launches, Cementos Molins reinforces its commitment to sustainable construction and the circular economy. In addition to a lower carbon footprint, the use of these cements and concretes makes it possible for its customers to obtain green building certifications.

According to Salvador Fernández, Area Manager Mexico, Spain OPC, Cement & Concrete at Cementos Molins, “the launch of low carbon footprint cements and concretes is a step towards fulfilling our roadmap and producing carbon neutral concrete by 2050. Our aim is to boost social development and people’s quality of life by creating innovative and sustainable solutions for construction. However, carbon neutrality requires the support, action and commitment of all actors in society, from administrations and governments to customers and end-users.”

Commitment to sustainability

The company’s announcement is in line with the objectives set out in its “Sustainability Roadmap 2030”, a roadmap that will lead the company to cut its emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to 2020. This commitment will accelerate the emissions reduction plans the company has been undertaking since 1990 and puts the focus on the strategic goal of delivering carbon neutral concrete by 2050.

The “Sustainability Roadmap 2030” reflects how sustainability is the main pillar of Cementos Molins’ strategy and highlights how the company works simultaneously on five priorities: Health and Safety, Climate Change and Energy, Environment and Nature, Circular Economy and Corporate Social Responsibility.
